I Want My Hat Back

Published on 21 February 2018

Goodness me, it's been a while since my last post.

I have bub's sleep regression to thank for that. We've had a fun couple of months where she'd only sleep when lying on us, so there was a lot of time spent pinned down. On the up side, I realised I could read ebooks on my phone, and managed to read 13 books in January, and I'm on my 6th this month. Which is more than I've read in years! Unfortunately, productivity in other areas took a steep decline. We've just gotten back from sleep school, and are now getting back on track. Here's to newly recovered hours of potential productivity, so let's kick it off with a quick little review.

In addition to my own reading for this year, I've spent much of my time reading (and re-reading) a bunch of childrens' books. I'm rediscovering some old favourites (even if most aren't quite age appropriate yet) and discovering some new ones. I can't believe how much I've missed reading, and I intend to allocate some of what little personal care time I have to reading more.

There are some absolute gems in childrens' books, and my sister found this one and picked it up for bub after not so quietly laughing to herself as she read it in the shop.

This story is about a bear who has lost his hat and goes in search of it, politely enquiring with other animals he meets on his way.

It's beautifully illustrated by the author, Jon Klassen, in digital and Chinese ink (or so the book information tells me), and the story layout is elegant in its simplicity, and in my opinion, encourages creatively reading aloud with different voices for the animals.

Without giving anything away, the key events, while very much appropriate for children, are subtly mature. It's very funny for more grown up reasons (an excellent quality of any good piece of childrens' entertainment). As one GoodReads reviewer said, it's been purchased for bub, but I will read it to everyone who visits because it is absolute gold.

You can pick up a copy of this hilarious title at Book Depository.

Some fans have also created a wonderfully done short of the book. As it's the complete book, technically there are spoilers, so view at your discretion. Enjoy!
